Being a Living Thing
I found the Hina Batta laying eggs on the plateau in late summer. The grasshopper stretches their ovipositors long and lays eggs in the soil. It was the first time I had actually seen grasshoppers laying eggs, and it was a very mysterious sight.
It is said that adult Hina Batta appear twice a year, around June and September. The individuals we saw this time are thought to have hatched and grown from eggs laid by individuals that occurred in June, and the eggs laid this time overwinter and hatch the following year, continuing their lives.
I feel that the generation cycle of insects is much shorter than that of humans, but that may be why they are able to respond more easily to changes in the environment.
