Kagami-mochi

kagamimochi

Kagami-mochi is one of Japanese traditional New Year decorations that is an offering to the god of grain. Two round rice cakes that look like an old mirror and a bitter orange "Daidai" that looks like old personal ornament "Magatama" are general decorations of Kagami-mochi in modern times. In addition, two rice cakes mean the sun and the moon. Dried persimmons, ferns, kelp, and other items are also used as decorations, but the decorations vary depending on the region. Kagami-mochi is generally displayed from December 28th to January 15th, after which rice cakes are broken and eaten.
