Reuse of poison

yamakagashi
  • Yamakagashi | Tiger Keelback
  • There are two species of poisonous snakes in Japan and Tiger Keelback is one of them. Although they are usually calm, they prefer waterside areas and often hide in rice fields and waterways, so you should be careful when you see them. They are characterized by black dots on red body.
They have two types of venom, one secreted from its fangs located behind the upper jaw and the other secreted from the neck mainly to protect itself. Frogs are the main food source of the Tiger Keelbacks, and they are known to actively eat poisonous toads. The poison from the toads they eat is stored in the poison glands in their necks. A single toad can satisfy both its stomach and its poison glands, which is quite a bargain.

Toads secrete their venom from a bulge behind eyes and from warts on the back.
